PrEP can reduce the risk of HIV infection by more than 90 percent if used properly, but is far less effective if not taken as recommended.
We recommend PrEP for people at high risk of HIV infection. In practice, this mostly applies to people who have had anal sex without a condom or been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the past six months.
Although there is less information about how effective PrEP pills are among people who inject drugs.
Undoubtedly we know that PrEP pills reduce the risk of getting HIV by at least 90% when taken as prescribed. In conclusion, we don’t recommend PrEP for people who inject drugs.
